Alice comes from a whole family of magicians, all of whom attended Brakebills. That tradition nearly ended with Alice, however, as she was not invited to take the entrance exam. Though she did not know it, the school did not want her to meet the same fate as her older brother, Charlie, who had been a student several years prior. Despite this, Alice found a way to break into the school and they let her take the exam regardless. Once accepted, Alice largely kept to herself. She is painfully shy and withdrawn, though increadibly gifted with magic.

Alice excelled in her classes and was soon discovered to have a particular gift for phosphoromancy, the ability to manipulate light. This made her one of the rare "physical kids," and this placed her in the same field of study as Quentin, Eliot, and Margo.

Alice and Quentin almost accidentally became friends by helping each other with complex and forbidden magic that resulted in disaster. Q, much to her surprise, was someone she desperately needed in her life. He accepted her, and in many ways understood her as few people had before. They ended up in a relationship together after their trip to Brakebills South, and for a time believed they were in love. It fell apart quickly, however, as it never really should have happened to begin with.

Alice is driven mostly by a desire to be better than her parents, who are both miserable and trapped in a very small pocket of the world, bound to keeping magic secret to the point of misery. At the beginning, Alice was driven to learn magic as a means to finding out what happened to Charlie, and once she learned the truth, thought magic was pointless. If all the power in the world couldn't get her what she wanted, why bother? But it didn't last long. Though her ambition is aimless, she still wants to be the best there is - and she knows she can be if she only stops holding herself back.

This need for power that frightens her and the desire to protect the people she loves is what drove her to willingly follow her brother's footsteps and become a niffin. She saw no other way to save them from the Beast, and for the first time in her life, she felt the limits she placed on herself fall away. It was bliss, and magic became all that mattered.

When Quentin found a way to bring her back, she was furious. She hadn't had to worry that she was unhappy, or felt like she had to place limits on herself. She was purely magic. Restrained by her restored humanity, Alice became bitter and angry, and still hasn't worked out quite how to be her old self again.

Anakin was born into slavery. He never knew another life. He and his mother struggled to survive the harsh conditions of Tatooine, a desert planet on the outer rim with little to offer anyone. He worked day in and day out for his master, Toydarian Watto, laboring in the scrap yard.

He spent his free time learning to work with machines. He built an android C3PO from scrap, making him capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of tatooine. He intended the droid to help his mother and make her life at home easier to manage.

He learned to pilot anything he could get to move from a very young age. Flying is his first love despite the many accidents and set-backs he faced in the beginning.

When Ani was nine, Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi arrived on Tatooine. Upon learning that Anakin was born without a father, and feeling the strength of the force in him, Qui-Gon decided he had to help him. Anakin piloted in a race that won him his own freedom and soon left with the Jedi for Corousant, where he was presented to the council as the Chosen One.

The Chosen One was prophesied to be the downfall of the Sith, born of the force and blessed with exceptional power. The council did not wish to train him, as he was too old and too afraid to truly learn their ways. unwilling to accept this, Qui-Gon decided to train him regardless. After Qui-Gon’s death, Anakin’s training was taken over by Obi-Wan.

As the council predicted, Anakin was not the perfect padawan that Qui-Gon had hoped he would be. He was rash and impulsive, prone to strong bouts of emotion that trumped reason and control, but he was unparalled in his natural talent with the force. His progress exceeded anything qui-gon had expected of him.

This made Anakin arrogant. with all the stories about the prophecy that he was the chosen one swimming around in his head along with his incredible power, anakin began to spiral out of control. He rescued his own master, Obi-Wan, and saved his life many times. he was beginning to believe he was untouchable.

Jedi are meant to be detached, to be above human restrictions brought on by deep connections to others that cloud judgement. Anakin could not live that way despite his best efforts. He loved his mother, and he loved Padmé Amidala. He tried to fight it, but his desire to use his powers to protect them controlled him. And how could loving someone be wrong?

His mother died in his arms despite everything he did to try to save her. His prophetic dreams told him of her suffering, but he was helpless to end it before it took her life. He swore he would never allow himself to fail like that again. his pain and his guilt consumed him, both for failing to save her and for failing as a Jedi.

In the end, this determination to conquer death was Anakin’s downfall.

James was born late in his parents’ lives after they believed they would never have children. He was their miracle baby, and they adored him. His parents spoiled him, and though they did their best to raise him right, he still became very quickly accustomed to an incredible amount of privilege. They made sure he knew not to support pureblood supremacy, but his status as a wealthy, spoiled pureblood led James to grow up with the idea that he is better than other people. This belief was only confirmed when he went to school at the age of 11 and discovered he was incredibly gifted with magic. His teachers took to him quickly and he accumulated a horde of friends and followers who all but worshipped him.

Among those were 3 boys who would later become part of the Marauders, a group of mischief makers who made it their mission to break every rule they could manage while they were in school. Sirius Black was more than just a best friend, he was a brother. He and James complemented one another perfectly, right down to their arrogance and privilege. They brought out some of one each other’s best traits - loyalty, selflessness (when it came to one another), bravery and honor - and encouraged many of their worst.

Together they behaved as though they owned the school, and many of their classmates were more than happy to accommodate that belief. They were the top of their class, the constant center of attention, and exceptionally popular. Anyone who challenged their position were quickly and effectively dealt with.

This clash of ideals is what brought them head to head with Severus Snape, who did not believe they were much of anything but arrogant bullies. James in particular loathed him, based on the idea that Snape thought himself above him. Severus, a half-blooded Slytherin from a poor family with limited magical background but who clearly exceeded James’ abilities in several areas, was everything James could not stand. He, by all accounts, should have left Snape in the dust, but he couldn’t. And James hated him for it. He was classless, unwashed, generally unpalatable in character, and a Slytherin to boot, and yet it seemed to make no difference. Snape still didn’t seem to understand where that put him in the social ladder of the school. And James, not used to someone in even his broadest social circles thinking so little of him, took it upon himself to constantly try to teach Snape exactly where his place was.

The torment was one of the things that placated James. He enjoyed making Severus miserable more than he enjoyed most things, and he fully believed he deserved it. This conflict defined their relationship and Severus’ future relationship with James’ son, Harry.

Despite this constant clash, however, James was not entirely defined by his relations with his enemies and rivals. More than anything, he is defined by his honor and his loyalty. He stood by what friends he did have unwaveringly, especially the Marauders. He trusted them all with his life and limb and never once doubted them, even when he should have.

When it came out that Remus was a werewolf, a species feared and rejected by Wizarding society, James and the others stood by him. At a record-breaking young age, the three of them became Animagi so they could support him in his roughest times. It was an incredibly dangerous task and could have rendered them permanently disfigured, but all three of them were successful in their transformations.

When Sirius ran away when they were 16, James and his parents didn’t hesitate to take him in and adopt him as their own. His family was saturated with dark magic and pureblood supremacy, and they were only too happy to help him get out of that life. He and Sirius supported one another through everything, including the war.

James joined the war because of his belief in honor and his belief in fighting fair. The Death Eaters stood against his fundamental beliefs and threatened everyone he loved, and it wasn’t much of a choice for him. However, shortly after joining the war, James and his wife Lily were forced into hiding and James was unable to do anything. He died trying to protect his wife and infant son, and died knowing Peter, one of his dearest friends, had betrayed them to their deaths.

Narcissa was born the third daughter of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, the child of Cygnus and Druella. While her sisters looked so like their father, the youngest looked like their mother, softer at the edges, fairer. Her looks were deceiving, however, as Narcissa was just as strong-willed as the other two. She did not have Bella's viciousness or Andy's stubbornness, but she matched them in other more important ways. Her strength was in words, in loyalties, in knowing how to play off of other's strengths and weaknesses. In many ways, she completed the set and the three of them thrived together. She was raised to play her part, of course, and to be the most capable of serving their Lord and her eventual husband. All of them were, and each of them thrived in that life, or so she thought.

When Andromeda left, Narcissa was fifteen and devastated. She had not seen it coming, had never expected her strong, proud older sister to stray so far from the teaching she and Bella clung to in their own ways. With the absence of Andromeda standing shoulder to shoulder with them, everything changed.

Bella grew somehow more distant and more protective at once, more afraid of losing another sister. Her parents were less insistent that she so closely follow the footsteps of their eldest child, the Dark Lord's most faithful who could be lost at any time to a wayward curse or a prison cell. Narcissa changed. She prayed to the gods to turn her to stone, to make her immovable, to make her perfect. She had to be steadfast in all things. She had to be the one they could not lose. Her family would not survive another loss. She would never give them reason to doubt her, not even for a moment.

She married Lucius Malfoy, a respectable match, salvaged from the scraps of their shame after their daughter turned traitor. The Blacks all but sold Narcissa in the hope she would return some of their former glory to them. Bellatrix has not born an heir, Andromeda was gone, and she was all they had left to bargain with. She did not love him, was not lucky enough to have that bond as her sisters did with their respective husbands, but she would not complain. Her family needed her.

As luck would have it, she and Lucius played well against one another, complimented each other in unforeseen ways. He was ambitious, proud, manipulative, and she was willing to do whatever it took to see his ends met. She bought loyalties with money and with sex, with promises and love affairs, whatever it took to get what she wanted. She did not have the same raw power as Bellatrix, but she was equally capable of making her own ends meet. At least, in all areas but one.

For years, they were not gifted with the child they needed. Abraxas, Lucius' ever-present father, began to grow impatient, and she knew he wanted his son to leave her. She tried everything, especially after the loss of her first child to sudden miscarriage. It took her years enduring a largely distant marriage; though she was sure she loved Lucius, she believed he only cared for her insofar as she was useful. It had been enough, but without a child it would never carry her through.

When finally she fell pregnant with Draco, she was grievously ill. She was laid up in bed for most of her pregnancy, with only the house elf and Severus Snape for company, sent to her at her husband's request. They grew close during this time, and eventually she named him godfather to her son.

Everything changed when Draco was born. She and Lucius fell in love with their child, and then with one another, finding that last piece they needed to truly care. The threat of a broken marriage was gone, their future secured, and they were free to truly love each other. She, however, could never love him as she did her son, above whom she valued nothing. Her devotion was singular, and it came to define her despite all her expectations.

After the first war, the three of them fell in to a quiet life, with no extended family to speak of after the death of Regulus Black and the imprisonment of all three Lestranges. But she was content and raised her son to the best of her ability, pouring all her love in to him til he became insufferable for his spoiled demeanor. In her eyes, however, the boy was perfect. Nothing could convince her otherwise.

In the second war, it would bring an end to her other loyalties. When Lucius faltered and was arrested, she even briefly turned on him to try to shield Draco from the worst of it. She did everything to keep the fallout from her husband's failure from dragging down her son, and again did all she had to to keep him in good graces among the Death Eaters.

When the moment came that she had to choose betraying Voldemort for Draco's sake, choosing to lie about Harry surviving the curse a second time, she did not hesitate for a moment. And she, the unwavering constant, the faithful, the enduring, was not questioned. She was not an obvious threat, but with a single word she helped bring the Dark Lord's empire to its knees, and he did not so much as look in her mind for deception. Had he done so, she knew without a doubt she would have died before the boy breathed his last. But it was for Draco, and she would have gladly died to try to get to him, even in vain. Nothing mattered but her child's survival. Nothing.

When Bella died, when the war was lost, Narcissa still did not lose her stride. The family recovered and regained a place in the magical world, albeit slowly. It was never the same, but Draco was alive and that was enough for her.

After a long time, she reached out to Andromeda again. They both had lost everything but a child (and though she still had her husband, Narcissa and Lucius were not quite as in sync as they were before. He relied on him less, needed him less, and so needed support in his place). It was painful and bitter and hard, but the sisters eventually reconciled. It was never perfect, and the cracks were always there to snag them from time to time, but they had each other and it was all she truly needed.

Narcissa lived out the rest of her days in peace, and though she never truly learned from her mistakes, never accepted the new world order wherein her kind was not seen as better or more powerful than anyone else, she did her part and she, at least, was satisfied.

Peter was born in 1959 to a witch mother and a muggle father, a child of both worlds. Though his childhood was more or less normal, there was considerable distance from his father even at a young age. He did not know of his wife’s magical ability until their son was born, and, feeling betrayed by the secrecy she believed necessary, emotionally left his family. He found excuses to be out of the house, and took a job overseas the first chance he could. Peter largely did not know him, and Marcy struggled to raise their son alone.

Peter was thrilled to be accepted to Hogwarts. He had never had many friends in his muggle primary school — his clothes were second-hand, he was restless and often called annoying. His views of the world were through a wizard’s lens (despite his mother’s efforts to raise him in his father’s world, a last ditch effort to keep her family together). He was too loud and too blunt to get along with many. He acted out when he was young, talking back to his teachers, refusing to do his work, and getting up and leaving in the middle of lessons.

This behavior did not alter much at Hogwarts, but he found a niche in which he belonged. Peter was a Hatstall, and was very nearly placed in Slytherin, but eventually the hat made another choice. Peter did not ask to be placed anywhere — it was a truly neutral decision. His bluntness found its home in Gryffindor instead. His back-sass became more soft spoken, drier, easier to overlook. He had more interest in his school work and did better.

He became friends with his dorm mates early on, though they were not much of a group for some time. Peter was always open, always friendly and enthusiastic, and his restlessness inspired plenty of spontaneous adventures. Though he was still decidedly muggle in many ways and ignorant to many facets of the wizarding world, he felt for the first time in his life that he belonged somewhere. He bonded first with James, but the other two followed soon after. His optimism made it difficult for him to get discouraged despite the resistance he felt at the very beginning of their relationship.

As time went on, Peter’s intense interest in school dwindled and once his enthusiasm died, so did his work ethic. He spent his classes sketching instead of paying too close attention. His mind wandered often and it deeply affected his performance in school.

He constantly strove to be friends with everyone, and though he was open and friendly, something about him was just shy of being in James’ and Sirius’ league. He fit in well with them, but their charisma was less reserved than his, brighter and more noticeable, and Peter realized many only wanted to be his friend to be close to them. As he got older, he became quieter, less inclined to reach out, tired of being used. Though he still adored his friends as deeply as ever, he was wounded that they never tried to help him bridge the gap he perceived to be between them. He was not as brilliant, not as beloved, not as favored, and his steps started to falter.

His reputation of laziness followed him all through school. His work was almost always handed in unfinished, and all his work was covered in doodles and sketches. He did well enough on exams, which is the only reason he got through.

It was Peter’s idea to map the school. He wanted to be a cartographer and map all the magic and forgotten places of the world. He drew the map by hand and the others did most of the enchantment. It was one of their greatest successes after becoming animagi. Both those accomplishments combined allowed them to make more mischief than they ever had before.

Peter loved being a rat. It allowed him to slip in to places no one else could reach, listen to things no one else was aware he could hear, learn secrets he could use to his advantage. He could slip by unnoticed and blend in with any setting, unlike James and Sirius who stood out no matter where they were. His best trait was that he was entirely unremarkable, and it opened doors that were forever closed to the other three. It was the first time his perception of himself as average became a good thing.

Peter loved the magical world but never truly felt he was a part of it. His interests were in the more practical applications, the least magical subjects with the sole exception of transfiguration. He started to wonder if he shouldn’t simply rejoin the muggle world in which he’d been raised and use magic only as needed. Compared to the growing turmoil of the magical community, it sounded tempting. But when graduation came and his brothers in arms joined the war, Peter, frightened and unwilling, had to go too. It wasn’t a choice. He couldn’t leave them.

For the first two years, he scraped by by the skin of his teeth, surviving by sheer force of will. His brothers protected him, made up for his faltering and his gaps in skill. But things started to shift. Doubt started to tear them apart from one another, and the other three became preoccupied with their own worries. Remus, with his mission unknown to the others. James with his need to protect his new family and fend off the advancing offers of the Dark Lord to join him. Sirius with his fears about facing his own family on the front lines. And Peter was left behind, expected to follow but with no one now to lead him.

He could not survive, physically or emotionally, on his own. He turned to hiding more instead of fighting, taking up the mantle of war and the constant battle cry less and less. He was afraid of rejection for his choice, but his brothers did not seem to notice. His doubts only magnified, his insecurities grew, and his fear began to consume him. He could not fight the war alone, and yet alone was exactly what he felt he was. He started to wonder whether they really were his brothers at all, or if that was a dream he’d been the last to let go of.

Battle wary, only nineteen, he fell out of step with the Marauders. He met less than savory wizards who offered him safety. The other side was winning and they whispered in his ear that they, they who might have been his brothers if only one thing had changed, if he’d been placed in Slytherin, oh they could keep him safe. He could still find his place with them now - they would not fault him. And so Peter, hesitant and unsure, did not turn, but he did what he did best. He listened. He stuck to the shadows. He was loyal to those who protected him. He tried to walk the line, never choosing one or the other until he had no other option. He was offered the biggest secret of the war and he took it.

Peter did not want to die. He betrayed them, Lily who he loves, James who he admired, and Harry who he had never known, Sirius and Remus who he had once been willing to die for. They, who he had loved above all, who had promised and failed to protect him, who had sworn to be his brothers in blood and in battle. They who had left him long ago and did not seem to realize he had noticed.

Not proudly, not enthusiastically, Peter finally relinquished a single and terrible secret. He was willing, even though he cringed as the words tumbled from his mouth.

Sirius came after him, and in Peter’s mind proved right that he had always loved James more. He did not ask why, did not care. It did not matter. James had always mattered more. It would have been better for Peter to die in James’ place. James’ life was more valuable, and it shattered him.

So Peter, in turn, destroyed all that was left of the Marauders. He escaped. He endured.

He thought of nothing since.

Luke and his twin sister Leia were born at the start of the Galactic Empire. After the death of their mother, Padmé Amidala, and the fall of their father, Anakin Skywalker, the twins were separated for their own protection. Their father, now Darth Vader, was never to know they had survived birth. Leia was taken to Alderaan where she was made princess and Luke was sent to live on Tatooine, a desert wasteland with his father's only remaining family.

Luke was raised by Owen and Beru Lars as a moisture farmer, but it was a life ill suited to him. He, like his father, had a passion for flying at a young age and he wanted to leave the join the academy to get off his homeworld. His uncle forbade it, however, and Luke remained on their farm.

Far above him in the galaxy, his sister (about whom Luke had no knowledge) was fighting for the Rebel Alliance, working against the oppressive Empire. She stole the plans to the Death Star, a massive ship that had the power to destroy whole planets. She snuck the plans into an astrodroid, R2-D2, and sent him away to find one of her father's allies before she was captured by the Empire. Artoo and his counterpart C-3P0 landed on Tatooine, seeking an old Jedi Master. Instead, they were taken and sold to the Lars family and put in Luke's charge.

When Artoo escaped to look for Master Kenobi, Luke chased him down and found Obi-Wan, known to him as Old Ben, which set of a chain of events that led Luke to joining the Rebellion to try to return to plans to Princess Leia. Luke learned he, like his father, was sensitive to the Force, and was set to be trained in its arts.

In the mean time, Darth Vader and the Emperor learned of the son of Anakin Skywalker, and sought to turn him to the dark side by any means necessary. Luke was the Rebellion's last real hope to toppeling the Empire and taking on Darth Vader and the Emperor, both Sith Lords, and they wanted to destroy that threat.

After a confrontation with Vader in which Luke's right hand was cut off, Luke learned his identity and learned the Sith Lord is his father, who he believed had been killed by Vader.

Conflicted now, Luke continued on with his training until he finally confronted the Empire. He believed there was still good in his father and tried to turn him back to the light. It nearly cost him his life, but Luke was successful. Vader killed his master the Emperor to save his son's life, and died himself in the process. Heartbroken, Luke gave Anakin a proper Jedi burial and returned home with Leia, who he now knew was his twin, and his friend Han Solo, who would later become his brother-in-law.

Years later, Luke established a school to train young force-sensitive children. His nephew, Ben, was sent to him at a young age when his parents no longer knew how to handle his acting out and erratic behavior. Luke did his best, but Snoke, a proponent of the dark side, had already begun grooming Ben and there was little Luke could do. Ben eventually turned on him, killed all of Luke's students, and disappeared to join the First Order - the dark organization that rose from the ashes of the Empire.

Luke, feeling he had lost everything and unable to kill his sister's son, fled to the far reaches of the galaxy. For fifteen years, the First Order hunted him unseccessfully until Rey, a young force-sensitive, found his hiding place and went to him to be trained. Luke, however, refuses. He will be the last of the Jedi, and with his eventual death, he believed balance will finally be restored to the Force.

Salazar came from a long magical bloodline, dating back farther than the records were kept. He was born in the mid-900s to a large family, third youngest of eight siblings. He had two younger sisters, three elder, and two elder brothers. He hailed from the Fenlands of eastern England, and grew up in the marshlands there before irrigation and damming dried up the land. All his family were magically inclined, and they lived peacefully there until Salazar was in his mid-teens. Then, his mother and sisters were accused of witchcraft and heresy, and sentenced to a death he was forced to witness.

Soon after, Salazar fled in search of stronger magics, determined that he would not share their fates. He was bitter and angry at the non-magical community and considered them all to be a threat. He stuck to the shadows of the world, collecting all the magical knowledge and insight he could until he had become one of the most powerful wizards of the age.

It was on his journey that he met another wizard, several years his junior, by the name of Godric Gryffindor. When it became apparent they shared much by way of magical talent, the two quickly became friends. Soon, he considered Godric to be closer to him than either of his surviving siblings, and would have done anything his friend asked.

Years down the road, after meeting two witches of similar talent, the four of them decided to start a school of magic to pass on the multitude of knowledge they had gained over the years. For a while, all was well, until Salazar spoke up about his dislike of muggle-born witches and wizards being welcome in to their school ( headcanon here ). He left, bitter and angry all over again and never returned to try to reconcile with his friends.

He passed on the Slytherin name to his children - though it would eventually become the Gaunt bloodline that would one day father Lord Voldemort himself. He died before his time of an illness for which there was no magical cure. Though he claimed to have been satisfied with the content of his life, this was a falsehood; to his dying day, he wished he and Godric had made amends, but his pride had never let him ask for it.

Almost a thousand years later, Salvatore Oram was born to a pureblood family, the reincarnation of one of Hogwarts’ founders. He, like his previous self, had an affinity for snakes and could speak their tongue before he had even learned English.

When he went to attend Hogwarts at the age of eleven, the Sorting Hat told him his proper name and his true birthright, and revealed in kind that his former friend, Godric, was likewise among the new students. Though he remembered next to nothing of his life before, he knew there was bad blood between them and made no move to try to smooth things over. He was unaware that the other two - Rowena and Helga - were also among them.

It was difficult knowledge for him to swallow, that he was not only a founder but the one most scorned by history and memory. He read the books that told him why, that was but it didn’t feel right. He knew, somewhere deep down, that history had gotten it wrong.

Instead of struggling with it, however, Sal decided to simply reject it. He knew his previous life had not ended a happy one and he had no interest in repeating the past. He wanted a fresh start, and this would be his chance to get it. He remembers very little, and the more he pushes his old identity away, the more difficult it is for him to remember the person he was, or the people he had once held most dear.
